I cannot use Video Enhancer at all, when I click "Choose" with any type of
file it crashes with the following message:

Unknown exception caught

This is what the log recorded:

Thanks for reporting!
This seems to be an issue with the component used for skins.

You can avoid it by removing skinengine.dll from Video Enhancer folder. VE will look differently, but the error should be gone.

I did delete the skins dll, and the error remains:

Unknown exception caught
Unknown exception caught
(80004005)

The only difference is that now when I click on "Choose" the program
does not crash, it just freezes (and no entry is recorded in the log file).
Before choosing, Preview and Play work just fine.

Update: the error window has a title that wasn't there before:

"Error during creating a list of codecs"

and then inside the window the "Unknown exception code (80004005)" error.

It then gives me a warning that the file will be very large because a compression
codec was not selected (I have the FULL K-lite codec pack installed, and it works
perfectly with Adobe After Effects and VLC player). If I click "Start" anyway, the
program crashes.

Interestingly, even though Video Enhancer is the only program running, I can
see several FFDShow icons (blue FFA and red FFV) in the bottom right taskbar.

I don't know what else to do to get this thing running...

Well, some codec in your system crashes when MS DirectShow tries to enumerate them.
This might be ffdshow (it's infamous for being quite unstable) and might be some codec installed with After Effects.
