I downloaded the trial version of this program a few days ago.  I had a .mov file I needed enhanced to 720x480 and if this worked, I'd buy it.

It did work.  It worked amazingly.  But I realized I'd done the wrong file - no prob.  I'd try again with the right one tomorrow.

Now it won't work.  It says I need to download the Quicktime Alternative.  So, I do.  No sweat.  Now it bombards me with an error message every time I try to enhance the file.

"Unknown Exception Caught"  It says.  "(80004005)"

What does this mean?  Is it just an issue with the trial or something?  I don't want to buy it if it's not going to work.  This is really disappointing.  I thought I'd found the perfect program.  This was literally my last hope.  Embarrassed

Additional info:  the file is very large (nearly 20 gig) and I'm not using any filters.  The "wrong file" I'd done first was the same size and type, just an earlier version of the movie.

Hi lilah,

Quicktime is a bit alien family of formats in Windows and it's hard to use it with standard Windows API which Video Enhancer uses. This is why Video Enhancer requires QuickTime Alternative. Unfortunately, while this package evolved it dropped support for some APIs, and modern versions do not work in VE. You need a 1.7x version like this:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_quicktime_alternative/1593/

With this version Video Enhancer can open most of Quicktime files (.mov included) but not all - those compressed with very modern H.264 codec won't be opened. Better support for Quicktime will be added in future versions.

Well, thanks for the reply.  I guess it's just not going to want to work.

If I buy the software now, are upgrades to future versions free, or would I have to buy again?  I might just wait this one out (or at least until I'm given better saving options for my video projects than .mov).

Now all upgrades to 1.x.x versions are free.
Version 2.0 was originally planned to utilize GPU and be very different, but now this major change is postponed for later versions and even though 2.x versions will be quite different from 1.x, upgrade to 2.x will also be free.

As for MOV files, if you really have an option of saving to AVI instead of MOV it will really simplify the process.

Not good.

I trialed Video Enhancer awhile ago. Was reasonably satisfied with the results but held off purchasing. I bought a low-cost videocam recently and thought immediately about Video Enhancer. The VE trial had expired (so I couldn't retest), but I remembered how it was advertised as working with all codecs on one's system, so I didn't hesitate to purchase. Now that it's up and running, I'm learning about this issue the hard way, and MOV with h.264 is the 'only' way the videocam records. No options. And with MOV h.264 becoming pretty much the standard (especially for web videos) for low-end videocams, this is a huge issue.

Please update, soon.

All H.264 .MOV files are in fact standard .MP4 files which has been renamed to .MOV.

The best solution is to simply rename the .MOV files to .MP4 to force it to use another splitter than QuickTime.

From my experience, QuickTime splitter is crap with .MP4 files and I got video/audio desync probably because QuickTime splitter doesn't report the frame rate properly.

I recommend installing gabest's MP4 directshow splitter. After installing this splitter, you will be able to open the renamed .MOV files (now with .MP4 extension) directly in Video Enhancer.

Make sure you have installed DirectShow codec for H.264 such as ffdshow.

In fact, there is a MP4 plugin for VirtualDub and if you install the plugin in VirtualDub, you can edit MP4 files directly in VirtualDub as well. The only drawback is that you can only save the files as .AVI though. But there are ways to convert those .AVI files back to standard .MP4 files but it's a complicated process.

One HUGE problem with editing in VirtualDub is if your MP4 files contain AAC audio. VirtualDub and the AVI file format does not support AAC audio, so you will loose the audio.

I recommend Avidemux for editing non AVI files. It'll open and save in many formats and the editing is similar to VirtualDub.

Download the MP4 splitter here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205650&package_id=246121&release_id=541146

In order to install it, just open command prompt in the folder where you have unzipped the MP4Splitter.ax file and type this into the command line:

Code:
regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax

Do not delete the MP4Splitter.ax and it must stay in the folder where you put it.
